For an entertaining slice of history. Williamsburg lies at the heart of America’s Historic Triangle, which connects
three key sites in Colonial history — Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown — along a 23-mile scenic roadway.
Founded as the Virginia Colony’s capital in 1699, Williamsburg is home to the world’s largest history museum, offering
authentic, interactive insight into Colonial American daily life. The city, however, is anything but stuck in the past: Modern-
day draws include two major amusement parks, an outlet mall, numerous museums, and miles of wooded nature trails.

As the temperatures rise, head outdoors. Time
travel to the 1700s and mingle with costumed
actors posing as townspeople at
Colonial
Williamsburg
. The grounds house art museums,
restored buildings, stores, and restaurants, all
designed to period specifications. Take an inform-
ative guided tour of Colonial Williamsburg’s
18th-century gardens, meander the grounds of
the Williamsburg Botanical Garden, or admire the
English boxwoods at the Nelson House. Stretch
your legs for a nature-meets-history walk along
the 3.5-mile Greensprings Interpretive Trail.

Extra-special events are in store for visitors during
the winter months, including period celebrations
at Colonial Williamsburg. Many attractions are
open year-round, and there’s no better time to
explore one or a few of the area’s wide-ranging
museums. Immerse yourself in the stories of the
American Revolution at the Yorktown Victory
Center, check out native wildlife and a planetarium
at the
Virginia Living Museum
, or browse the
galleries at the Muscarelle Museum of Art on The
College of William & Mary’s campus. For an indul-
gent shopping spree, make a beeline for the
130-plus stores at Williamsburg Premium Outlets.

Whether by car or foot, admiring Williamsburg’s
autumnal foliage is a must. Cruise down the
Colonial Parkway scenic roadway, which connects
Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown, or take
a leisurely stroll at Waller Mill Park. It’s also grape-
harvest season, so a tour and tasting at the
Williamsburg Winery is in order. Be sure to make
time for a southern lunch at the Old Chickahominy
House — signature dishes include Virginia ham
biscuits, Brunswick stew, and chicken and
dumplings, capped off with a slice of homemade
pie. And don’t forget Busch Gardens amusement
park’s festive
Christmas Town
celebration.

Embrace active pursuits, starting with a fun-filled
day at
Water Country USA
, Virginia’s biggest
water park. Attractions include the 552-foot
Colossal Curl waterslide, a 23,000-square-foot
wave pool, and a children’s water playground.
Check out the Go Ape treetop adventure course,
complete with zip lines and obstacles, at Freedom
Park. For lower-impact family-friendly fun, take a
ferry across the James River and fill a couple of
containers with blueberries you pick yourself at
College Run Farms. And from early September to
mid-October, fuel your creativity with gallery
walks, live artisan demonstrations, and open-air
concerts during Arts Month.
