hy Go?

For another side of the American South. Indeed, the region below the Mason-Dixon Line is not all antebellum

mansions, sultry cities, and coastal family hotspots. In the interior, unexpected finds include placid lakes, misty mountains,

arts towns, and even winter ski opportunities. Discover

another

South, from the colorful Appalachian character of West

Virginia to Virginia’s lyrical Shenandoah Valley to the rustic corners of the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina.

1. HISTORIC NATIONAL ROAD:

Take

a scenic drive along this 16-mile

stretch of West Virginia that wends

its way past vistas, historic sites and

structures, state parks, museums, and galleries.

2. APPALACHIAN GALLERY:

Stock up on locally hand-

blown glass creations (glass manufacturing figures

heavily into Morgantown’s commerce), ceramics,

weaving, and other regional crafts.

3. SKIING:

Virginia’s fair share of vertical inclines beckons cold-weather fans. The Bryce Resort ski area

offers great and — thanks to artificial snow-making — reliable winter skiing.

4. SHENANDOAH RIVER:

Embark via canoe, kayak, or tube with Massanutten Adventures.

5. SAPPHIRE NATIONAL GOLF CLUB:

Tee off and enjoy mountain views in North Carolina’s Sapphire Valley.

6. FROZEN FALLS TUBE PARK:

Even if you don’t ski, there’s plenty of snow fun to be had. Slide down the

slope at Frozen Falls Tube Park near the Sapphire Valley Ski Area.

7. LURAY CAVERNS:

Work up some heat while exploring these caves, which are a comfortable 54°F (12°C)

year-round. Filled with otherworldly formations, Luray even features a stalacpipe organ that makes the

stalactites sing.

8. MUSEUM OF THE CHEROKEE INDIAN:

Immerse yourself in Cherokee heritage at the Cherokee Indian

Reservation in North Carolina, about an hour west of Asheville.

9. NANTAHALA GORGE TRAIN EXCURSION:

Hop aboard the Great

Smoky Mountains Railroad for a journey through the river gorges

and mountain tunnels of North Carolina. The train departs

from Bryson City.

10. WINE AND WAR:

Follow a wine trail and along with

stops at some of Virginia’s top wineries, you’ll find Civil

War battle grounds and memorials, charming villages,

and lovely scenery.
