For all four seasons — each one offering something distinct from the next. You’ll know you’re here once you
spot King Neptune. A 34-foot (10 meters) bronze sculpture of the mythological figure watches over the resort community
from his vantage point in Neptune Park. Some 3 miles (5 kilometers) of beachfront buzz during high season, the crush
of sun-lovers laid out along the sand. Offseason, a different but equally compelling vibe emanates — more meditative,
but still warm enough for surfside walks, pier fishing, and building sandcastles well into the fall. Restaurant menus spill
with seafood options, and museums hold a treasure of stories about the area’s seafaring culture and history.

As the weather gears up for beach season, it’s the
perfect time to explore one of the last great salt
marsh habitats on the East Coast. Miles of rivers,
bays, lakes, and capillaries to the Atlantic Ocean
and Chesapeake Bay are explorable via
kayak
.
But guided boat tours and fishing trips are also
abundant. The Virginia Beach fishing pier officially
opens in April, when celebrations begin to pop up
on the calendar, with the East Coast She Crab
Soup Classic in April, and the Pirate Party on the
Beach and the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival in May.
Anytime is a good time to enjoy a seafood meal
at Catch 31.

Even at their chilliest, Virginia’s temperatures don’t
scare everyone from the surf — at least not dur-
ing the annual Polar Plunge Winter Fest. For nearly
a quarter-century, Virginia’s largest Special
Olympics event has drawn thousands of brave
souls to raise money. But most visitors find a con-
nection to Virginia Beach’s nautical character
through explorations of museums and monu-
ments. The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum,
the
Cape Henry Lighthouses
, the Old Coast
Guard Station museum, and the Naval Aviation
Monument are a few that warrant attention.

The summertime sizzle may dissipate at the end of
high season, but Virginia Beach’s recreational offer-
ings are a far cry from fizzle. Warm weather can
stretch well into the fall, offering plenty of opportu-
nity for
sandcastle-building
and leisurely strolls
along a more peaceful boardwalk. The calendar
includes a lively Virginia Beach Craft Beer Festival
in October, and since 2008, the annual JT Walk,
which brings together thousands to fight for a cure
for ALS, and has become a local tradition with live
entertainment, a treasure hunt for kids, a party, and
more.
27 – 39
No need to say much about July, August, and
September in Virginia Beach — the season sells
itself. If there were no other attributes to claim, the
miles of broad beach would be worth the trip
alone. Frame it with a famous
boardwalk
busting
with attractions, and a shoreline thick with fishing,
boating, and water sports activities, and who has
time for anything else? The spring and summer
months are packed with festivals. After the Stars
and Stripes Explosion on July 4, four oceanfront
stages at Seventh, 17th, 24th, and 31st streets
provide live music nightly throughout the summer.
