SO SWEET
Decadence is the name of the
game at Universal CityWalk’s
Toothsome Chocolate Emporium
& Savory Feast Kitchen, which
opened in September 2016.
The restaurant features a full
menu and a glass display filled
with all manner of confections,
but the real draw is its artisanal
milkshakes topped with baked
goods. The wide-ranging flavors
include chocolate x5, bacon
brittle, and red velvet. Its facade
of towering smokestacks and
whimsical steampunk-themed
interior are themselves worth
a visit.

THE SETTING:
Twin Imperial guardian lion statues flank a large glass-and-wooden door with a
circular cutout, opening into Hawkers’ modern, industrial-inspired interior. Rows of high-top tables
with white barstools line walls partially covered in corrugated metal. Large-scale black-and-white
photos of hawkers (street vendors) serve as a reminder of the hip eatery’s humble inspiration.
THE MENU:
Hawkers lives up to its “eat the streets” motto, with a wide-ranging menu of fare
from Malaysia, China, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. All dishes, from grilled-meat
skewers and wings to salads, soups, and fried rice, are meant to be shared. There are 10
varieties of noodles to choose from, such as
mee goreng
(Malaysian egg noodles with shrimp,
bean sprouts, and
much
more in a sweet chili sauce), and a diverse lineup of small plates,
including
bao
(steamed, filled buns), curry meatballs, and crispy cod with black bean sauce.
Libations on offer include imported Asian beers, craft brews, and sake.
