Warmer temperatures and low humidity beckon
visitors to head for the great outdoors. Tennis
enthusiasts can delight in the options of more than
500 courts (a mixture of grass, clay, and hard
courts). And this is a great time to tee off at one
of the island’s 26
golf courses
, many designed
by legends of the sport. For a break in the activity,
head to the renowned Charlie’s L’Etoile Verte for
lunch or dinner. The menu changes daily based
on the day’s catch.

The relatively cool air is invigorating, with highs
around 60°F (16°C), and temperatures rarely
drop below freezing. And while alfresco pursuits
can be very enjoyable, this is also a good chance
to get to know the island’s vibrant indoor artistic
spaces. More than a dozen galleries and studios
offer exhibitions and workshops. In February, the
month-long Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration
showcases the rich traditions of the Gullah peo-
ple, descendants of West Africans who settled in
the area and formed the keystone of Low Country
culture, including a
distinct cuisine
.

Warm up with a
bike ride on the beach
; Hilton
Head’s hard-packed sand makes for an ideal
cycling surface. There is no off-season for fishing
here, but the refreshing temperatures from October
to December make it a real pleasure to spend the
day on the water. Oyster season is now in full swing,
so head across the bridge from Hilton Head Island
to Bluffton, the scenic town famous for its hand-
picked river oysters. While you’re on the mainland,
hit the Tanger Outlets for deals on shoes, apparel,
and more.
27 – 39
All 12 miles (19 kilometers) of Hilton Head
Island’s beaches are public, and this time of year
these expansive stretches of sand are exactly
where you’ll want to be. Options for water
activities abound, from water skiing, surfing, and
windsurfing to paddle boarding and even riding
atop the waves on an aquatrike. Rent a
kayak
to
explore tidal waters, marshes, creeks, and inlets.
Or book a nature cruise to observe dolphins and
other wildlife in their natural habitat. Then head
to the nightly season-long HarbourFest at Shelter
Cove Harbour for live music, food vendors, and
children’s activities. The highlight of the festival is
the weekly fireworks show.

hy Go?
For a coastal experience accentuated by Low Country culture and Southern hospitality of the highest order.
Rolling dunes and wide beaches set the scene for a seaside retreat. Palmetto trees and live oaks draped in Spanish
moss create a backdrop for leisurely cycle rides (the preferred way to get around the island). Fishing, boating, and myriad
other water sports are available. On land, tennis and golf aficionados will soon discover that this is their Eden. A buzzing
arts scene and a variety of shopping and dining opportunities round out the Hilton Head experience.
