Tidewater Golf Club; Alligator Adventure

hy Go?

For an all-American beach vacation with copious family-friendly diversions. The hub of leisure activity in this

region is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, located in the center of an expansive section of coastline called the Grand Strand.

Attractions revolve around the water, from a seaside amusement park to a boardwalk jam-packed with sights. Golf and

shopping are big draws, too. For a scaled-down experience, turn to smaller beach towns throughout the Carolinas, or

the history-rich southern city of Charleston, South Carolina.

South, Atlantic Coast

1.

BROOKGREEN GARDENS:

In Murrells Inlet, stroll the oldest and largest sculpture garden in the U.S.

2.

MINIGOLF:

Play a round at the crash survivor–themed MayDay Golf in North Myrtle Beach.

3.

THE CAROLINA OPRY:

Sit back, relax, and enjoy a dazzling live show in Myrtle Beach.

4.

MYRTLE BEACH STATE PARK:

Search for shells during low tide.

14 – 26

It’s peak beach season in Myrtle, and there’s

plenty of sand to go around. Offshore activities are

equally plentiful: surfing, fishing, kayaking, para-

sailing — just about any water sport you can think

of. Exploring the oceanfront

Myrtle Beach

Boardwalk

, bordered by stores and restaurants

galore, is a must, as is a ride on the Myrtle Beach

SkyWheel. Having worked up an appetite, pick a

table at Dirty Don’s Oyster Bar and Grill and order

the Dirty Don’s Dunkin’ Pot, brimming with clams,

oysters, shrimp, crab legs, sausage, potatoes, and

corn on the cob.

1 – 13

Highs stay below 70°F (21°C) during the coolest

months of the year. Whether or not that’s beach

weather to you, there’s another pastime that’s

easily enjoyed year-round: golf. For a distinctly

South Carolinian experience, play 18 holes at

Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, built on the site of a

onetime rice plantation. The course’s streams, live

oaks, and antebellum-style clubhouse are all

photoworthy. If you prefer Atlantic Ocean views

with your round, book a tee time at

Tidewater

Golf Club

, noted for its range of elevations.

40 – 52

Another thing there’s no shortage of: shopping.

Peruse stores along the Intracoastal Waterway at

Barefoot Landing, which also offers a marina,

MirrorMaze,

reptile zoo

, and live music at the

House of Blues. And if you’re up for the trip to

Pawleys Island (about a 40-minute drive), the

famed rope hammocks named after the destina-

tion make for a long-lasting keepsake. Prefer to

stretch your legs in the great outdoors? Take a

hike along the Sculptured Oak Nature Trail at

Myrtle Beach State Park, viewing some of the last

remaining maritime forest on South Carolina’s

northern coast.

27 – 39

Be it animal encounters or bumper boats, Myrtle

Beach is exceedingly kid-friendly. Among its many

appealing attractions is Family Kingdom, a seaside

amusement park with more than 45 rides. Brave

the Swamp Fox wooden roller coaster, take an

exhilarating dive on the Sling Shot, and spin every

which way on the Tilt-A-Whirl. Add educational

value to the mix via the interactive exhibits and

programs at the Children’s Museum of South

Carolina. There’s plenty of all-ages nighttime

entertainment, too, from watching knights joust at

Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament to acrobats

performing on a life-size vessel at

Pirates Voyage

.
