hy Go?

For a family-friendly four-season destination that boasts a wealth of hiking trails, lakes and streams, waterfalls,

and wildlife. If you like your travel experiences less rustic, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, also offers thrilling amusement parks,

extravagant miniature golf courses, multiple dining options, the largest collection of craftspeople in the U.S., and one of

the country’s best aquariums.

Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains

14 – 26

As the days begin to warm, outdoor activities ramp

up. Play a round of golf at the award-winning

Gatlinburg Golf Course, among the most beautiful

in the U.S. Go fly-fishing for trout on a babbling

brook. And visit the historic

Great Smoky Arts &

Crafts Community

, where more than 120 arti-

sans and craftspeople create and display their

wares. The community, which was established in

1937, features a variety of artists in action, and

goods ranging from quilts to ceramics and leather

to jewelry.

1 – 13

The trees may be speckled with snow and tem-

peratures a little brisk, but for many this is an

opportune time to visit. Go skiing at the Ober

Gatlinburg Ski Area & Amusement Park, the only

ski resort in Tennessee. View sharks and stingrays,

sea turtles and penguins (there’s even a tropical

rain forest), at

Ripley’s Aquarium of the

Smokies

(one of

eight

Ripley’s-themed attrac-

tions in the area). And shoppers will love perusing

a variety of factory outlet stores for brand-name

bargains.

40 – 52

In October and November, the area explodes in a

kaleidoscope of color, as the trees shed their

leaves and send them on their annual migration

from limb to forest floor. Between the world-class

leaf peeping, a variety of events revel in the bounty

of the season: the Smoky Mountain Harvest

Festival, the Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair, and

Oktoberfest. And the holiday season is celebrated

in big fashion at Dollywood, where Rudolph the

Red Nosed Reindeer and friends headline the

theme park’s

Smoky Mountain Christmas

Festival

.

27 – 39

What occupies approximately 521,000 acres

(210,000 hectares), has hundreds of miles of hik-

ing trails (including a portion of the famed

Appalachian Trail), countless mountain streams,

and waterfalls galore —

and

doesn’t cost any

money to enjoy? That would be the

Great Smoky

Mountains National Park

, and when you vaca-

tion in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, it’s practically

in your backyard. And since the days are longer

this time of year, you’ll have even more time to

enjoy all that this vast space has to offer.
