For its intriguing history and wealth of antiquities. As if the vestiges of cultures that carved their niche out of

nature itself weren’t enough to lure visitors to the Middle East’s beguiling Mediterranean coasts, there are tranquil seaside

towns nestled along the base of forest-clad hillsides, and endless expanses of white- and golden-sand beaches. And

while Egypt’s north coast at El Alamein and Tunisia’s coastal resort towns are prime sun-and-sea domain, just step off

the beach in Hammamet, and head to the

medina

(old town) to get happily tangled in the web of shop-lined alleyways

inside the shade of its ancient walls. With Beirut’s attractions close by, the coastal city of Adma offers the natural beauty

of its rugged Harissa Mountain, as well as delicious Lebanese cuisine.
