1. EPHESUS:
The well-preserved ruins of
this one-time Roman city (it was also
part of Greece; now it’s in Turkey) offer
a magnificent look back in time. Don’t
miss the Terrace Houses excavation or
the nearby House of the Virgin Mary.
2. CARPET SHOPPING:
Turkey is renowned for the quality
of its handmade carpets and rugs. Stop by a factory, see
how they’re made, and bring home the perfect souvenir.
3. SAILING:
View the Turkish coast from a traditional
gulet
(a wooden sailboat) on what’s known as a Blue
Voyage. Go for a day cruise from Bodrum, or add a multinight itinerary after your exchange or Getaway.
4. MARKETS:
Perusing the stalls in a Turkish bazaar is much more than just shopping. It’s all about the
art of haggling, and it’s simply a blast!
5. BATHS:
The
hamam
(Turkish bath) takes personal grooming to a whole new level. Get scrubbed, get
soaked, get shiny and clean.
6. CHANIA:
Spend a day around Crete’s beautiful Venetian-style port, wandering the narrow streets and
dining at seaside cafes. Highlights include the fortress and the lighthouse.
7. HISTORIC CRETE:
No visit to the island is complete without exploring its ancient past. Two picks:
Knossos, the mysterious Minoan palace and surrounding settlement; and the Heraklion Archaeological
Museum.
8. RETHYMNO:
Steeped in history, this Greek city offers a delightful harbor with plenty of shops and
restaurants to explore. Check out the old fort, or work on your tan at the lovely beach.
9. SAMARIÁ GORGE:
On Crete, visit the longest canyon in Europe. The organized hikes are at once
challenging and awe-inspiring.
10. ELAFONISI:
Considered by many to be the best beach on Crete (if not all of Greece), Elafonisi is a
remote escape with crystal-clear water, white and pink sands, and stunning scenery.
hy Go?
For visits to countries that are at the crossroads of two continents. From the seeds of democracy sown in
ancient Greece to the enormous sway that Turkey’s Byzantine and Ottoman empires had over the region, a stay in either
nation is a profound, unique, and historic experience. Yet alongside the archeological sites and centuries-old villages lie
two modern paradises: gorgeous beaches, clear Aegean and Mediterranean waters, and exquisite culinary delights. Be
sure to pack a history book alongside your swimsuit — you’re going to need it.

“We caught a bus into Yalikavak (near Bodrum, Turkey), which is a very nice coastal town with restaurants and
bars.”
