1. LA CARTAPESTA:
Pick up a figure made of papier-mâché — a traditional
handicraft of the region around Lecce — at this shop.
2. MATERA:
Marvel at this city’s
sassi
(stone) dwellings, some now operating as
bars and hotels.
3. LECCE:
Stroll the Via Vittorio Emanuale, lined with cozy cafes and shops, and
grab a bench in the Piazza del Duomo to soak in the vision of the elaborate
baroque cathedral.
4. TRULLI:
Visit villages such as Alberobello, near Matera, where these strange
conical-shaped houses are clustered. The oldest surviving trulli date to the
16th century.
5. ISERNIA:
Visit the remains of a 700,000-year-old dig site — one of Europe’s
oldest human settlements.
6. THE FOOD:
Dig into one of southern Italy’s signature dishes — such as fava
beans with chicory and olive oil — and savor a glass of pinot grigio or
moscato at one of many excellent country restaurants.
7. COSTA SMERALDA:
On Sardinia’s northern coast, rub elbows with the rich
and famous. Porto Cervo is a great spot for people-watching.
8. FRATERNA FOUNTAIN:
This 13th-century structure, built of Roman ruins and
restored in 1835, reflects the layers of history in Isernia.
9. METAPONTO LIDO:
Wander among the Roman and Greek tombs, temples,
amphitheaters, emporiums, and columns in this coastal town on Italy’s boot.
10. VINEYARDS:
Even if you don’t drink, visit at least one.Tenute Olbios, in Olbia,
Sardinia, offers tours of its cellars, which include plenty of tasting and samples
of regional cheeses.
