Burg Finstergrün
hy Go?
For the opportunity to experience Europe’s most stunning mountain range. All told, the Alps stretch for
approximately 750 miles (1,207 kilometers) across multiple countries, from Nice on the French Riviera to Vienna, Austria.
Seasonal outdoor activities — skiing and snowboarding, bicycling, and hiking — are plentiful, and thanks to the countless
villages peppered among the foothills, each region has a distinct personality and diverse attractions. With their welcoming
spirit and Alpine charm, Austria’s Maria Alm, Schladming, and St. Georgen ob Murau are some of the most popular
destinations within this awe-inspiring landscape.

With average high temperatures nearing 60ºF
(16ºC), snow season typically comes to an end by
mid-April. Fans of winter can still get their fix,
though, because the
Eisriesenwelt ice cave
, a
bit northwest of Schladming, usually opens for
tours on May 1. This also is the ideal time of year
to visit a few of the region’s other unique attrac-
tions, such as the Holz Museum, the Museum of
Health and Medical Science, and more around
St. Georgen ob Murau.

The Austrian Alps are marvelous any time of year,
but during these weeks, when the mountainsides
are painted white with snow, they’re particularly
majestic. They’re also rife with
skiing
and snow-
boarding opportunities, not to mention snowshoeing
and sledding. St. Georgen ob Murau is located right
at the base of Kreischberg’s nearly 25 miles (40
kilometers) of runs. And three of the five regions
that make up Austria’s massive Ski amadé collec-
tive — Hochkönig, Salzburger Sportwelt, and
Schladming-Dachstein — are readily accessible
from Maria Alm and Schladming.

The weather will probably be getting a little chilly,
but don’t let that stop you from taking in some of
Salzburgerland’s most fascinating sites: the vari-
ous castles. In fact, cooler temperatures might
enhance the overall ambiance of the medieval
architecture at Burg Klammstein near Maria Alm or
Burg Finstergrün
outside of St. Georgen ob
Murau. When you do decide to warm up (or even if
you don’t need to), head to St. Johann im Pongau’s
Oberforsthof Alm for a delicious regional meal.
27 – 39
Approximately 211 miles (340 kilometers) of
hiking trails
traverse up and down Maria Alm’s
Hochkönig region. Some of them even have a spe-
cific theme. Take the fun-loving Marmot Trail or
stroll the Butterfly Path. Better yet, set out on a Trail
of Legend. There are 12 in all, and each details —
and provides a sort of walking tour of — a local
myth, such as the tale of the “Ghost Horse of
Dienten.” Mountain biking, rafting, and golf are
other popular warm-weather pursuits.
