1. CLAUDE MONET’S HOUSE:
Tour
the artist’s colorful home in Giverny,
and as the father of impressionism
himself once did, take inspiration from the
luxuriant gardens.
2. ROUEN:
Take in the city’s skyline punctuated
with numerous spires of religious buildings,
including Notre Dame Cathedral, a frequent
subject of Monet.
3. MONT-SAINT-MICHEL:
As pilgrims have done
since the Middle Ages, cross the bay (albeit now via
shuttle bus) to summit the rock on which the iconic
abbey is perched.
4. BAYEUX TAPESTRY:
Get a history lesson in
pictures. The 900-year-old embroidered cloth
depicts William the Conqueror’s Norman invasion
of England.
5. HONFLEUR:
Contemplate the fishing harbor and
timber-framed houses of this little town where the
changing light on the River Seine attracted
impressionist artists.
6. MUSÉE DES BEAUX ARTS:
Admire works by
Velázquez, Caravaggio, Rubens, Modigliani,
Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, Monet, and more at
Rouen’s distinguished fine-arts museum.
7. D-DAY BEACHES:
Pay tribute to service
members who turned the tide of World War II with
the 1944 Allied landings on Normandy’s shores.
8. DEAUVILLE:
See and be seen at the chic
seaside resort town. Stroll the promenade past
beach huts bearing some of the biggest names in
film, or recline on the sand under a brightly colored
parasol.
9. PAYS D’AUGE:
This is dairy country. Savor the
quaint and peaceful villages of Camembert,
Pont-l’Évêque, and Livarot, home to the famous
cheeses that bear their names.
10. THE CIDER ROUTE:
The Pays d’Auge is also
apple country. Sample apple-based hard cider,
calvados
apple brandy, and the aperitif
pommeau
among the orchards in which the fruit is grown.

For a slice of history set against a quintessentially French backdrop. Once a Viking dukedom, today the
northwestern corner of France is divided into the administrative regions of Upper and Lower Normandy. Idyllic
countryside and picturesque fishing harbors characterize the scenery. Indomitable castles, imposing abbeys, and
medieval ruins provide glimpses into the area’s distinguished past. In the changing light that captivated the impres-
sionists, the River Seine flows toward coastal cliffs, fashionable resorts, buzzing ports, and immense beaches.

“[From Connelles, there’s] lots to see and explore: Giverny to the southeast, the provincial city of Rouen, charming
interior villages seemingly lost in time, the D-Day beaches, Honfleur and Trouville-sur-Mer, and Mont-Saint-Michel
still within a day-trip.”
