For the never-ending party on the beach. Or for relaxation on a secluded stretch of sand. It’s up to you. The
Atlantic seaboard along Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina runs for some 348 miles (560 kilometers). It’s essentially
impossible to catalog all the beaches, but suffice it to say that Florianópolis, the region’s capital city, is said to be in prox-
imity to about 100 of them. Itapema has its share of coastal delights, too, while the inland town of Santo Amaro da
Imperatriz provides access to the area’s other natural attractions.

Throughout April and May, temperatures steadily
drop until June’s typical high is around 73ºF
(23ºC). But the cooler weather doesn’t dissuade
outdoor enthusiasts. Near Itapema, you can hike
past photogenic cascades en route to the summit
of 656-foot-high (200 meters) Pedra da Gurita.
Or, clip into a harness and hold on tight during a
waterfall rappelling adventure
with Santo
Amaro da Imperatriz’s Tartarugas outfitters. More
mellow pursuits include the Museu Histórico de
Santa Catarina and Museu de Arte de Santa
Catarina in Florianópolis.
1 – 13
Florianópolis’ daily average high from January
through March is 85ºF (29ºC). In other words, this
is the time to stake your claim to a nice piece of
beach real estate. Ilha de Santa Catarina, the
state’s namesake island, is home to both the
hippest Florianópolis neighborhoods and the most
happening beaches, such as Brava for the people
watching,
Mole
for surfing and beach sports, and
Lagoinha do Leste for solitude. Itapema’s Meia
Praia is a hub for water activities and is lined with
restaurants.
40 – 52
With the weather warming up — back to about
85ºF (29ºC) by December — ocean recreation
returns to the top of most people’s priority list.
Bombinhas, a tiny town located on a gorgeous
peninsula near Itapema, is the place for scuba div-
ing expeditions in southern Brazil. Book a trip to
the Arvoredo underwater reserve to spy octopus,
stingrays, turtles, and more. The nightlife in
Florianópolis is almost always hot. Dance into the
wee hours at the Concorde Club, one of the city’s
most rollicking spots. Looking for something more
low-key? Even at night, the temperatures are mild,
so enjoy your
dinner alfresco
.
27 – 39
During this cool stretch, there’s still a great way
to warm up achy joints and sore muscles: Santo
Amaro da Imperatriz is well-known for its
natural hot springs
. And while a simple soak in
the mineral-rich water is thoroughly rejuvenating
on its own, guests can also take advantage of
local spa treatments that range from massages
to hot stone therapy. If retail therapy is more to
your liking, shop for handicrafts at Florianópolis’
various markets and fairs, such as Feira das
Alfaias.
