For the West’s answer to New York: a city that never sleeps. Las Vegas got its start in the mid-1800s the
way many American frontier towns did: It was a much-needed way station between nearly anywhere in the middle of
the country and the West Coast. Today, 35 to 40 million people visit the city every year. Though, they certainly don’t
come here to rest anymore. Indeed, modern Las Vegas is an over-the-top adult playground that buzzes around the
clock. The casinos are legendary, but hardly the sole attractions. Nonstop nightclubs, world-class shopping, top-shelf
restaurants, comedy shows, magic acts, dance revues, concerts, and spas fill up most travel itineraries.

Typically mild temperatures make most spring days
ideal for taking in the region’s natural attractions.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation
Area
is a quick drive from the Strip, and offers
nearly 200,000 acres (80,937 hectares) of scenic
solitude. Popular activities include hiking, biking,
and rock climbing—or just a panoramic drive and
casual picnic. A bit farther west, Charleston Peak
soars to an elevation of 11,918 feet (3,633 meters)
above sea level. The surrounding wilderness is
crisscrossed by challenging trails among bristle-
cone forests and through canyons punctuated by
steep, craggy cliffs.

The local golf scene often is overlooked (or maybe
just overshadowed by the stunning structures
along the Strip), but there are many courses in the
vicinity, from the tropical-themed Bali Hai Golf Club
to the Pete Dye–designed Desert Pines. Celebrate
making a perfect sand wedge shot out of the
bunker or lining up an eagle putt on a long par 5
with your own championship dinner. A walk along
The Strip
leads to outstanding eateries at every
turn. Steak lovers should sit down to a six- to
eight-month-old, dry-aged cut at Carnevino, while
pasta fanatics can channel one of the city’s coolest
customers at Sinatra.

Although Vegas is situated in the Mojave Desert,
temperatures can be surprisingly brisk, with an
average high of about 60°F (16°C) from December
through February. Cooler days are perfect for
exploring some of the city’s popular open-air
attractions, such as the Downtown Container Park,
a shopping, dining, and entertainment complex, or
the
Neon Museum’s Boneyard
, where more
than 150 iconic signs from Las Vegas’ colorful past
are on display. Of course, crisp afternoons also
make a great excuse to while away a few hours
browsing The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace or
The Venetian’s Grand Canal Shoppes.
27 – 39
Average temperatures hover at about 100°F
(38°C), but don’t worry — there’s plenty of air-
conditioned indoor space to go around. Most of
the casinos along the Strip are mini destinations
all on their own — and you don’t necessarily have
to be a card shark or craps wizard to enjoy them.
For example, the MGM Grand boasts 115,000
square feet (nearly 10,700 square meters) of
shopping in The District. If you’d prefer to cool off
outdoors,
Lake Mead
is just east of the city.
Refreshing recreational options include swimming
and all varieties of boating fun.
