“Head to Casagranda’s Steakhouse or Uptown Cafe in Butte, Montana, for some great food.”
— monarck
1. DISCOVERY SKI AREA:
In Anaconda, warm up on Tenderfoot and Claim Jumper before
heading to the backside to shred Guns & Roses and rip through the Haunted Forest.
2. VISIT A GHOST TOWN:
Deserted Montana settlements such as Bannack and Virginia
City provide an eerie — and fascinating — glimpse of the Old West.
3. WASHOE THEATER:
It doesn’t really matter what’s playing; what’s important is experiencing an
evening at Anaconda’s immaculate Art Deco–style movie house.
4. PINTLER VETERANS’ MEMORIAL SCENIC HIGHWAY:
Accessible from Anaconda, this breathtakingly
beautiful, 64-mile (103 kilometers) drive epitomizes Montana’s landscape.
5. SNOWMOBILE EXCURSION:
Add some high-octane thrills to your wintertime activity schedule.
6. WHITEFISH MOUNTAIN:
Come for the skiing; stay for the year-round outdoor opportunities at Glacier
National Park, just 25 miles (40 kilometers) from town.
7. HOLIDAY LIGHT SHOW:
Just 45 minutes south of Blanchard, more than 1.5 million lights twinkle above
Lake Coeur d’Alene during this popular event that lasts from late November through December.
8. SILVERWOOD THEME PARK:
Brave the Aftershock hanging roller coaster or take it easy on the Ferris
wheel. Silverwood is located in Athol, a short drive southeast of Blanchard.
9. SCHWEITZER MOUNTAIN:
Skiers and snowboarders will discover 92 runs, 2,900 acres (1,174
hectares), and — perhaps most importantly — some 300 inches (762 centimeters) of snow, an hour
and 15 minutes northeast of Blanchard.
10. MICKDUFF’S BREWING COMPANY:
On your way to Schweitzer Mountain, stop in Sandpoint for
MickDuff’s Idaho-potato, hand-cut fries, and a Gouda ciabatta burger. Thirsty? Try one of MickDuff’s
handcrafted ales.
Bozeman:
For budding paleontologists,
the Museum of the Rockies is a must-
visit. It’s home to an internationally
acclaimed collection of dinosaur bones,
including more Tyrannosaurus rex spec-
imens than anywhere else on the planet.

hy Go?
For the vast expanses of unspoiled, untamed wilderness — and the many ways to explore it. The
Anaconda/Fairmont area is positioned deep in Montana’s Rocky Mountains — not far from the Continental Divide — so
the hiking and biking (and so on) is sublime. Whitefish, Montana, also in the Rockies, is situated close to Glacier National
Park, and is served by weekly nonstop flights from Chicago O’Hare International Airport during the winter. In northern
Idaho, Blanchard is the perfect base for days spent fishing, kayaking, and more. And during the cold months, both areas
offer great skiing and snowboarding.
