For all the beauty (and action) that the lake has to offer — as obvious as that might seem. Majestically ringed

by the rugged Sierra Nevada mountain-scape, it’s one of the most visually stunning natural features of the American

West. But Lake Tahoe is more than mere good looks. Water sports — boating, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and

so on — are plentiful. Scenic cruises are popular, too, and the nearby peaks offer dry-land activities such as hiking and

biking, and, during snow season, some pretty legendary skiing and snowboarding.

The weather during these weeks can be unpre-

dictable. Average daily highs, in fact, range from

54°F (12°C) to 72°F (22°C). In other words, some

days are perfect for golf — play 18 holes at the

famed

Edgewood Tahoe

course or the Jack

Nicklaus–designed Old Greenwood — while

others might be more suited for indoor excur-

sions. When you do choose to stay inside, there’s

plenty of fun to be had at the casinos. Play your

favorite table games at the Hard Rock Hotel &

Casino, savor a delightful dinner at Harveys’

classic Sage Room, or go to Harrah’s to see a

show and enjoy an evening of dancing at Peek

Nightclub.

40 – 52

With ski season approaching, the water tempera-

ture might be getting too chilly for a swim, but

that’s no reason to forsake one of the most pop-

ular lake activities: a scenic and serene cruise

aboard either the

M.S. Dixie II

or

Tahoe Queen

.

The old-time paddle wheelers offer daytime

sightseeing itineraries and evening dinner outings

that visit some of Tahoe’s most picturesque spots,

including Emerald Bay. In Tahoe City, stop in at the

Bavarian-themed Cobblestone Center for an after-

noon of shopping at unique stores such as Alpine

Heritage home furnishings, Ruffles and Ruffnecks

kids’ boutique, and the Uncorked Wine Bar &

Shop.

1 – 13

Annual snowfall around Lake Tahoe averages

somewhere in the neighborhood of 360 to 450

inches (914 to 1,143 centimeters), which makes

conditions this time of year fantastic at multiple

snow-riding destinations. Heavenly in South Lake

Tahoe features some 4,800 skiable acres (1,942

hectares) and 3,500 vertical feet (1,067 meters).

Squaw Valley

in the north has more than 170

runs and 16 bowls. Both are regional standouts

and should not be missed by winter-sports

enthusiasts. For those who don’t ski or snow-

board, but do want to play in the snow, Adventure

Mountain offers a dedicated sledding area and

snowshoe trails.

27 – 39

The Tahoe Rim Trail — a 165-mile-long (266 kilo-

meters) loop around the lake — is the ideal place

to get out for a simple wilderness walk or a full-

fledged trek. Multiple trailheads provide access

points to various day hikes that range in both

length and difficulty. On the south shore, typical

excursions include the Big Meadow jaunt and

the lengthier journey from the Kingsbury South

junction to Star Lake and back. Much of the Tahoe

Rim is open to mountain biking, too. And don’t

forget, after a hot day on the trail, nothing feels

better than

time on the lake

.
