As the days begin to stretch and offer more hours

of daylight, you’ll have ample opportunity to take

advantage of a host of outdoor pursuits. Golfers

will delight in the selection and natural beauty of

the area’s courses; the historic and highly rated

Cranwell course in Lenox is considered by many

a must-play. Visit the Berkshire National Fish

Hatchery in New Marlborough and see how trout

and salmon are raised from egg to fry to ready-

to-eat-your-lure size. Afterwards, try your hand at

fly-fishing

for one of the hatchery’s graduates

on a local stream.

1 – 13

Clear nights and star-studded skies. Glistening

snow atop the trees. If this isn’t the most magical

(and romantic) time to visit the region, it’s certainly

close. Go ice-skating on picturesque ponds or

cross-country skiing on quiet woodland trails. Visit

antiques shops for a unique souvenir. And for afi-

cionados of the written word, consider these

attractions: author Edith Wharton’s 1902 Lenox

mansion, known simply as

The Mount

; and

Arrowhead, the home in Pittsfield where Herman

Melville wrote his masterpiece,

Moby-Dick

.

40 – 52

Brisk temperatures and holiday cheer combine to

make for a delightful time to visit. If you love leaf

peeping, now is when you want to plan your stay

around New England’s

fall foliage

, as an explo-

sion of color lights up the beech, maple, oak, and

other deciduous trees. A drive along Route 7 past

Williamstown during October is sure to deliver on

the promise of stunning scenery. Events abound,

from film festivals to the arts to bountiful harvest

fairs. In December, the Christmas season ushers

in fantastic light displays, children’s activities, and

shopping opportunities, then culminates in a vari-

ety of delightful New Year’s Eve celebrations.

27 – 39

As the weather warms in the Berkshires, the arts

move front and center.

The Boston Symphony

Orchestra

has been making its mid-year resi-

dency at Tanglewood in Lenox since the 1930s,

and puts on a variety of performances, ranging

from rousing orchestral concerts to intimate string

ensembles. The Berkshire Theater Group opens

its busy summer schedule, offering whimsical

musicals, contemporary plays, and much more.

When you’re not waiting for a curtain to rise, learn

about Shaker culture at the Hancock Shaker

Village in Pittsfield. Or spend a day cooling off at

scenic Umpachene Falls, where if you’re not

swimming, you’ll most likely be the only one dry!

hy Go?

For a travel experience that is off the beaten path. From the moment you arrive in the Berkshires area of

western Massachusetts, the tree-lined mountains and bucolic settings will have you enthralled. While there are plenty of

outdoor pursuits, the Berkshires are world-renowned for a superb ensemble of events. So when it comes to packing,

here’s the takeaway: You’d better bring a nice suit along with your favorite hiking boots!
