Second Time’s a Charm

LUCY JERUE

PHOENIX AREA, ARIZONA

Rather than take their typical winter trip to Florida, New Jerseyans Bob and

Lucy Jerue exchanged for a week in Arizona’s Phoenix area. Having been once

before, the pair was able to spend two full days “just enjoying the beautiful

pool at our timeshare resort” and taking in attractions they’d missed during

their previous visit. Together, the Jerues relished gorgeous scenery during a

narrated ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad, toured a Frank Lloyd Wright–

designed home, and ate lunch in Apache Junction. The icing on the cake:

When their week was almost over, Lucy posted a picture on Facebook of her

and her husband enjoying their trip, and quickly received a message from a

friend who happened to be in the area. “The next night, we enjoyed dinner

in downtown Phoenix with my friend Margie and her husband, Rick,” Lucy

says. “It was the perfect way to cap off the perfect week.”

One With Nature

JANIS HALL

BANFF, ALBERTA

Looking to escape the Texas heat, Janis Hall, her husband, and her son

relished the experience of an exchange to the cooler temperatures and

incredible nature of Banff, Alberta. “The natural beauty around Banff is

truly amazing,” Janis says. “We saw brown bears, hoodoos, mountain

goats, waterfalls, steaming springs, glaciers, views from the top, hiked

around Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, and took hundreds of nature-

inspired photos.” And they didn’t go hungry, either, whether cooking in

their unit or enjoying dinner at a Greek restaurant, savoring high tea, or

sampling craft beers and fondue. The Halls were also able to spend quality

time with their son, who was on break between semesters of law school,

and to get together with a Canadian friend they hadn’t seen in years. “Our

cozy condo made it easy to have the time of our lives traveling a unique

part of the world,” Janis says.
