For a stay in the Theme Park Capital of the World. There are thrill rides, marine mammals, cartoons-come-
to-life, waterslides, and just about every kind of topsy-turvy, whirly-birdy contraption you can imagine, making it easy
to understand why so many moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas travel here with the kids. And as the num-
ber of vacationers has grown, so, too, have the out-of-park attractions. Today, Orlando proper can be just as enter-
taining as all the fantasy realms for which it’s famous.
Orlando and Other Inland Areas
14 – 26
Zip lining? Well, this is Orlando, so expect a nail-
biting twist. Forever Florida is home to the coun-
try’s first zip-line roller coaster, which starts 65
feet (20 meters) high and zooms through the for-
est at up to 20 miles (32 kilometers) per hour.
Gatorland’s Screamin’ Gator Zip Line
actually
flies you right above some of the resident croco-
diles and alligators. Back on terra firma, venture
to Leu Gardens for the delightful foliage, including
orchids, birds-of-paradise, more than 215 vari-
eties of roses, a magnolia collection, an herb gar-
den, and a citrus grove.
1 – 13
Mostly dry days and average daytime tempera-
tures of 75°F (24°C) make perfect conditions for
experiencing some of Orlando’s outdoor activities.
There are more than 170 courses in the area,
making golf an obvious choice. Come March, it’s
the beginning of baseball’s spring training. And the
ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex
in
Kissimmee is the home base for the Atlanta Braves
during preseason. Buy some peanuts and Cracker
Jack, and enjoy a day at the ballpark.
27 – 39
Escape — or embrace — Central Florida’s sum-
mer sunshine at one of the local water parks.
Disney’s Blizzard Beach
has a host of slides,
from the mellow Runoff Rapids to the heart-
pounding Summit Plummet. Or, hang loose in the
sand and surf at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. For
meaningful marine life interaction, book a day at
Discovery Cove, where you can swim with a dol-
phin and snorkel at The Grand Reef. Post aqua
activities, head to Pointe Orlando. There are a
number of restaurant options, and one more way
to chill out (literally) on a hot summer evening:
the minus5° Ice Bar.

Legoland. Theme parks are the highlight of most
every Orlando itinerary, and this is one of the best
times to visit them. The weather is a bit more tem-
perate, while the attractions often are a bit less
crowded. Remember, though, just because dinner
with a princess, practicing magic with Harry Potter,
or visiting “Antarctica” will probably be the highlight
of your trip doesn’t mean you won’t find anything
else to do. International Drive is rife with worthwhile
stops — a Titanic exhibit, WonderWorks, and so
on — and downtown Orlando is home to a bur-
geoning restaurant scene.
