The islands of the Southern Caribbean each have a diverse personality and

vibe, which means trips to this region are much more compelling than mere

beach escapes. Beyond Aruba, here are two islands for your consideration.

The eternally clear water off the coast of

Curaçao

is ideal for scuba divers and

snorkelers. On land, various strongholds, including the Dutch-built Fort

Amsterdam, which dates to 1635, provide a peek at the island’s rich history.

Willemstad’s colorful architecture (below) is also worth investigation.

The 17th-century Castillo de San Carlos Borromeo (right) is one of the most

popular colonial attractions on

Margarita Island

. Walk through the lively

Conejeros Market for fresh produce, empanadas, or a local souvenir.
