For a rural escape that’s easily accessible. Calabogie and Cobden are just a bit more than an hour’s drive

west of Canada’s capital, Ottawa. The Muskoka district’s Severn Bridge is less than two hours north of Toronto; other

notable communities there — Huntsville and Windermere — are only about 45 minutes farther on. Wherever you

arrive, though, and whether it’s golf or snow recreation or solitude you seek, it will be quite clear that the short drive

has taken you a world away.

Eastern Canada, Other Areas

1. CALABOGIE PEAKS:

Terrain parks, glades, bump runs, and cruisers will keep skiers and

snowboarders happily occupied during the cold season.

2. CANTHOOKS RESTAURANT:

The atmosphere at this Calabogie restaurant is rustic

elegance, and the menu — with pasta, seafood, and steak — is delectable.

3. RAFTING IN THE OTTAWA RIVER:

Sign on with Owl Rafting in Foresters Falls to paddle the

Ottawa’s hair-raising rapids or for a fun family float.

4. BONNECHERE CAVES:

The underground passageway is cool. The entombed fossils, millions of years

old, are mind blowing. Bonnechere is in Eganville.

5. THE GROUP OF SEVEN OUTDOOR GALLERY:

Take a walk through Huntsville to observe more than 30 of

the murals that make up this collection of free public art.

6. DOGSLEDDING:

You can’t go wrong with Winterdance Dogsled Tours, a Haliburton-based outfitter with

Iditarod experience and purebred Siberian huskies.

7. ROBINSON’S GENERAL STORE:

Drive to the hamlet of Dorset to shop at “Canada’s Best Country Store.”

8. MUSKOKA STEAMSHIPS:

Set sail from Gravenhurst and cruise the Muskoka lakes aboard the

RMS

Segwun

, a ship that dates back to 1887.

9. MOUNT ST. LOUIS MOONSTONE:

This family-owned ski and snowboard operation in Coldwater has 40

runs and 100 percent snowmaking coverage so conditions are almost always top-notch.

10. WINDERMERE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB:

There are first-rate courses scattered throughout Muskoka,

but Windermere is a true standout.
