Tourism Barrie (shopping)

hy Go?

For downhome hospitality and outdoor adventures. About two hours north of Toronto, Ontario, the Georgian

Bay and Shanty Bay areas entice recreation enthusiasts with snow-sport playgrounds such as Blue Mountain, Horseshoe,

Hardwood Ski and Bike, and more, as well as warm-weather activities that include golf, days at the beach, wilderness

excursions, and all sorts of boating. Meanwhile, the region’s local communities — Blue Mountains, Collingwood, and

Oro-Medonte — are peppered with unique shops and unassuming restaurants, and host a number of farmers markets,

craft fairs, and seasonal events.

Eastern Canada, Ski Areas

14 – 26

This is a season of transition. Average tempera-

tures range from 50°F (10°C) to 73°F (23°C).

Which means it’s also a great time for a broad

span of activities. Bounce around the backcountry

in or on assorted four-wheel-drive vehicles with

Xtreme Adventures and ATV Adventures. Drive

southwest of Oro-Medonte for more sedate

attractions, including the Simcoe County Museum,

home to some 30,000 relics that detail what life

has been like here through the ages, and dining

and

shopping in Barrie

, either downtown or along

fashionable Bayfield Street.

1 – 13

Pay no attention to the thermometer (it probably

won’t register anything above the freezing point

anyway); instead, bundle up and partake in the

winter wonderland of pastimes this region has to

offer. Skiing and snowboarding are obvious —

and solid — choices. With 42 runs, rated from

beginner to expert only,

Blue Mountain

is

Ontario’s largest snow-riding operation.

Horseshoe, just 15 minutes from Oro-Medonte,

may be the most convenient. If downhill schussing

isn’t your thing, consider a cross-country outing

at Hardwood Ski and Bike.

40 – 52

As temperatures cool, the local

foliage

begins its

annual metamorphosis from green to gold.

October often is the peak of this change and

numerous scenic drives — the Scottish High

Country Tour, from Collingwood to Feversham, and

the Blue Mountain Tour between Blue Mountain

and Ravenna — highlight the seasonal shift. After

the leaves fall, winter will arrive in earnest, and

with it diversions such as dogsledding and snow-

shoeing — and perhaps a hearty meal at the C&A

Steak Company in Blue Mountain Village.

27 – 39

The year’s warmest weather means it’s time to

play in the water. Canoe the Beaver River, or settle

in to a good book somewhere on

Wasaga Beach

outside of Collingwood. You shouldn’t have

trouble finding space; measuring nearly 9 miles

(14 kilometers) from end to end, it’s reportedly the

world’s longest freshwater strand. Near Oro-

Medonte, Lake Simcoe is popular for boating and

other maritime activities. You can even scuba dive

to a sunken paddle wheeler in the lake’s

Kempenfelt Bay.

1.

APPLE PIE TRAIL:

The Collingwood area boasts numerous bakeries, butchers, and even jewelers selling all things apple.

2.

FALLICIOUS:

Enjoy dining deals and retail specials during this autumn event in Blue Mountain Village.

3.

COOKSTOWN ANTIQUE MARKET:

Pick up a new decoration for your home.

4.

NIGHT SKIING:

Carve some turns after the sun goes down; most area ski hills offer night riding.
