Spotlight:
Martha’s Vineyard
In the summer, head to
Falmouth or Hyannis for a
quick ferry ride to Martha’s
Vineyard, where you’ll find
gorgeous beaches and a
range of attractions for the
whole family. Watch the
sunset at Edgartown
Lighthouse, and marvel at
the picturesque Gay Head
cliffs. Oh, and if you’re
traveling with children, be
sure to stop by the Flying
Horses Carousel. Built in
1876, the ride has been in
operation in Oak Bluffs
since 1884 (it called Coney
Island, New York, home
before that), and is the U.S.’
oldest carousel.
Boston:
Walk the Freedom Trail and
witness historical sights such as the Paul
Revere House, Faneuil Hall, the Old
Corner Bookstore, and, of course, Boston
Common. (1:20 from West Yarmouth)
Newport, Rhode Island:
Experience a
bit of America’s Gilded Age with guided
tours through some of Newport’s famous
mansions (left). (1:30)
Plymouth Rock:
Admittedly, it’s just a
big rock at the heart of Pilgrim Memorial
State Park. But it represents something
much bigger, and, because of that, is
worth a visit. (:40)
