AN UP-CLOSE LOOK AT ARIZONA’S
GOLDFIELD GHOST TOWN
he historic Apache Trail snakes 40 miles through
the sweeping canyons and man-made desert lakes
of Arizona’s scenic backcountry. Along this mostly
unpaved path, at the base of the Superstition
Mountains, lies Goldfield, a former gold-mining town estab-
lished in 1893, and known today as Goldfield Ghost Town.
By the early 1900s, Goldfield’s abundant mines and
famous tales of the elusive Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine lured
opportunists in the hopes of striking it rich. Local mines pro-
duced more than $1.5 million worth of gold before their ore
quality eventually dropped and the miners moved on, leaving
Goldfield a ghost town.
Less than a one-hour drive from Interval’s Phoenix-area
resorts, the town has since been authentically reconstructed,
bringing the early Wild West mining experience to life. Visitors can
pan for gold, take a train ride along the narrow-gauge railway,
and explore the underground mine. After touring the Mystery
Shack, step into the saloon for a drink, saddle up at the stables,
and enjoy a reenactment by the Goldfield Gunfighters.
