CLUES
n
This landmark is its city’s oldest structure, built in 1598 with imported stone
slabs, bronze, sand, and whale oil. It was constructed along the reef to ensure
a strong foundation, and is separated from the coast by a sandbar.
n
A fantastic view of the capital can be seen atop this fort. During the colonial
period, its purpose was to provide a clear view of the surrounding sea and
lush coastal jungle so that any potential attackers could be spotted. Settlers
hoped that the stronghold would deter pirates from coming ashore.
n
Today, the site serves as a museum, where visitors can access the former
barracks, prison warehouses, and a chapel with a water well. The fort retains
its original form—most notably a five-point maritime design.
