AREA RESORTS
The Galleria at Split Rock provides a wonderful —
and incredibly convenient — setting for any Pocono
Mountains vacation exchange. Enjoy golf, bowling,
a movie theater, arcade, and the notable H2Oooohh!
indoor water park without even leaving the property.
While the spacious villa accommodations, which
were purposely built back in the woods, give the
sense of a true Lake Harmony retreat, travelers also
have easy access to all the amenities at The Galleria
at Split Rock’s sister property.
Another Split Rock resort, the Willowbrook is an ideal
spot from which to explore not only the town of Lake
Harmony, but also the entire Poconos region. That is,
if you can pull yourself away from all the delightful
on-site amenities.
Milford also is home to a
somewhat macabre reminder
of the assassination of President
AbrahamLincoln. The bloodstained
American flag used to cradle the head
of the dying leader is housed at the Pike
County Historical Society’s Columns Museum.
An exceptional dining choice is the elegant Delmonico Room at the
Hotel Fauchère, which dates to 1852. Breakfast is available Monday
through Saturday; dinner is served Friday through Sunday. If possible,
though, make room in your schedule (and appetite) for the Sunday
brunch, with house specialties that include Louis’ lobster omelette,
stuffed French toast, and the cheddar-and-scallion scramble.
HAWLEY
Hawley is the place if you want to spend a little time at the “Big Lake,”
as 13-mile-long Lake Wallenpaupack is known. Created in the mid-
1920s for hydroelectric use, the state’s third-largest human-made lake
now is a hub of recreational activity. As in swimming, boating, hiking,
biking, and fishing. In fact, if it involves fun on the water, this place
probably has it. The Wally Lake Fest, held each year in August, features
everything from live music and a boat parade to an ice cream social, a
luau, and a wild mushroom walk (yes, you look for the edible versions).
Eating options are plentiful, too, and range from down-home
pub and pizza joints to various upscale options. There’s a popular
farm-to-table restaurant at The Settlers Inn, where you can order
delicacies such as duck liver pate, acorn squash with ginger quinoa,
and venison, depending on the season.
MOUNT POCONO
The region’s most comprehensive — and storied — casino is in Mount
Pocono. It opened in 2007, and is located on the grounds of the famed,
couples-focused Mount Airy Lodge, which had been the Poconos’
glitziest spot for decades, before falling on hard times and closing in
the early 2000s. So far, the casino version has had much better luck. Its
array of slot machines, table games, live entertainment, and eateries —
including Guy Fieri’s comfort food–themed Mt. Pocono Kitchen — has
proven to hit the jackpot with visitors.
There’s a different kind of casino in Mount Pocono, too. The Casino
Theatre Entertainment Center, a combination two-screen movie house
and old-fashioned ice cream shop makes for a perfect family night to
cap a perfect Poconos vacation.
