Key West is steeped in history, and this is a great
time of the year for cultural explorations. Tour the
Little White House, the winter home of President
Harry S. Truman. View a selection of original
artwork at the Audubon House Museum &
Tropical Gardens. And see
the house where
legendary author Ernest Hemingway lived
during his time on the island. After dark,
experience the grittier side of the island’s past at
The Green Parrot, which has been packing in the
crowds for live music and mayhem since 1890.

While most of the U.S. is bundled up in coats, the
Lower Keys are enjoying pleasant weather, with
average highs around 75°F (24°C). The humidity
is low, and refreshing sea breezes are omnipresent.

. Book a sunset cruise aboard a
catamaran, and toast our nearest star as it dips
below the ocean. Visit Fort Zachary Taylor Historic
State Park, and enjoy hiking trails, ranger-led
tours of the fort, and the nicest beach on Key
West.

The end of the year is a time for festivals and hol-
iday cheer. Halloween season brings the Haunting
of Fort Zachary Taylor, which delivers macabre
chills, trick or treating, and creepy stage shows.
And then there’s
Fantasy Fest
, Key West’s biggest
(and most colorful) annual event, which consists of
10 days of masquerade balls, costume contests,
street fairs, and one outrageous parade. There’s
also a Parrot Head convention, the Key West Film
Festival, powerboat races, a sand art competition,
and multiple (and distinctly unique) New Year’s Eve
celebrations.

Cooling off during the hottest months is as easy
as deciding if you want a leisurely beach session,
pool time, or a more active underwater pursuit.
For beachgoers who prefer to drop a blanket and
let the day unfold as it may,
Bahia Honda State
Park
has one of the nicest natural strands of sand
in the entire state. The park also offers daily boat
tours to the stunning coral reef at Looe Key
National Marine Sanctuary, which features some
of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the
Lower Keys.

hy Go?
For the warm, sub-tropical sunshine, and equally warm turquoise blue water, with a slower pace than Miami,
Fort Lauderdale, and other points to the north. The Lower Keys are a water sports aficionado’s dream come true. The
real magic, however, lies beneath the waves, where gardens of colorful coral and their equally vibrant denizens are easily
explored on scuba or snorkel adventures. Landside, partying doesn’t get more fun than along (and off of) Duval Street
in Key West, where charming establishments of bygone eras, such as Sloppy Joe’s, still stand — and thrive.
