Many Members. Your Voice.

1. O’CONNOR PROMENADE:

Take a

snapshot at the walkway’s south end,

where the 68-foot-high (21 meters)

Umhlanga Lighthouse stands as a

beacon for ships navigating the Umhlanga

Rocks area’s rough coastal waters.

2. UMHLANGA LAGOON NATURE RESERVE:

Hike a trail

through dune-forest canopy to the mouth of the Ohlange

River. Look for herons, warblers, and hundreds of other

bird species.

3. KWAZULU-NATAL SHARKS BOARD:

From Umhlanga, head out to sea as you observe boat crews clear

out and rotate shark nets used to protect local swimming beaches.

4. ESSENWOOD MARKET:

In Berea, snack on a savory steak pie, and bargain for handmade crafts such as

wildlife paintings and wood-carved masks and sculptures.

5. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK:

Brave the bush in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, and have your camera ready

when a zebra or one or more of the Big Five (cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhinoceros) make

their presence known.

6. LOWVELD NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN:

In Nelspruit, relax amid rain forest flora, see magnificent

waterfalls from the Cascades viewpoint, and enjoy scones and jam at the Red Leaf Fig Tea Garden.

7. SHANGANA CULTURAL VILLAGE:

Just outside of Kruger National Park in Hazyview, you can enter the

chief’s

kraal

(enclosure with huts) and feast on a lunch of chicken stew and

mieliepap

(polenta), while

villagers entertain with traditional song and dance.

8. SAN ROCK ART:

Follow Kruger’s Bushman Trail to see live animals as well as the wilderness depictions

painted onto boulders by Stone Age hunters.

9. SUDWALA CAVES:

Get a pedicure at the Fish Spa, look at Stone Age tools, and explore the stalagmites

that rise from the floor of the giant chambers.

10. SIBAYA CASINO:

In Umhlanga Rocks, play the slots — there are more than 1,200 — and sway to the

beat of traditional African drumming under the stars at Sibaya’s fire-lit

boma

.

At Mr. Funtubbles Fabulous Family Fun Fair in Durban,

the classic amusement park model goes indoors. While

token-operated kids’ rides with prizes entertain, the

highlight is a five-minute film in the XD Theater. Put on

the polarized glasses and hold on to your motion-

equipped seat.

hy Go?

For its interactive wildlife experiences. To say eastern South Africa has a high level of biodiversity is an under-

statement. In the northeast, past the game reserves and cultural villages of Swaziland, Mpumalanga province’s

world-famous Kruger National Park is the place to eye elephants and lions, and enjoy a

braai

around a

boma

(bush bar-

becue around a traditional fire-lit, open-air enclosure). But not all is spectator sport. Just a 20-minute drive north of

Durban, the bustling seaside resort town of Umhlanga Rocks plays host to an array of less-rustic adventures such as

body boarding, golfing, and shopping.

“We were 20 minutes or less from Kruger National Park. On our own we visited an elephant sanctuary and did a day drive

through Kruger, and then another day we drove to Swaziland.”
