The sky along the coastline can be foggy in May
and June, but there’s plenty to do inland. Start the
day with breakfast at
Snooze
. This a.m. eatery’s
extensive menu offers the sweet (blueberry Danish
pancakes), savory (gravy-covered breakfast pot
pie), caffeinated (mochas and lattes), and the
boozy (mimosas, bloody marys, and so much
more). Once you’ve had your fill, walk off your
meal in any of the numerous gardens at Balboa
Park, from a fragrant, colorful space dedicated to
roses to a bonsai display and koi pond.

Cooler weather is an excellent reason to spend
some time in San Diego’s museums. A classic
choice is the San Diego Natural History Museum,
which hosts both traveling and permanent
exhibits, including a fossil journey across 75 million
years focusing on the dinosaurs that once walked
the earth in Southern California. Also a good reason
to head indoors: beer. Take a tour and throw a few
back at Stone Brewery’s Historic Decatur Road
location. And if you love a good nightlife scene,
the
Gaslamp Quarter
won’t disappoint.
1 – 13
It’s a bit chilly for a dip in the ocean, but it’s the
perfect time to admire nature at its greenest
(particularly in February and March). Hike through
the coastal sage scrub habitat along Cabrillo
National Monument’s Bayside Trail, offering unfor-
gettable views of San Diego Bay and the city, and
explore the
Old Point Loma Lighthouse
and
adjacent living quarters, restored to reflect life in
the 1800s. Be sure to spend some time at the
monument’s western overlook to witness the
annual Pacific gray whale migration mid-
December through March.
27 – 39
It’s time to hit the beach: Mission Beach, that is.
Rent rollerblades and zip down the boardwalk,
then go for a ride on the Giant Dipper roller
coaster. Or head to La Jolla Cove, ideal for sun-
bathing or swimming and snorkeling amid
orange
Garibaldi fish
. For a top-notch meal with water
views, take your seat at George’s at the Cove and
select from three distinct dining experiences: fine
fare at California Modern, a more casual setting
at Ocean Terrace, or the chill indoor-outdoor
George’s Bar.

For laid-back living at its finest. Breezy Southern California offers a moderate climate year-round and a beau-
tifully craggy coastline. Located 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of Los Angeles is San Diego, a surfer’s paradise on the
Pacific Ocean, and easily accessible from resort towns such as Escondido, Ramona, and Carlsbad. San Diego is big on
culture, its epicenter being the bevy of museums located in the sprawling Balboa Park. Foodies will find plenty to love,
too, including some of the best fish tacos north of the Mexican border. What better to pair the tacos with? A beer from
San Diego’s rich microbrewery scene.
