For natural scenery so magnificent it’s believed to be transcendent. Sedona, Arizona, is at the heart of it all,
set within nearly 2 million acres (809,371 hectares) of wilderness land that’s peppered with otherworldly red-rock spires
and buttes, some of which are regarded as spiritual vortexes. The vast unspoiled territory also is ideal for outdoor activities
ranging from hiking and biking to fishing and four-wheel-drive excursions. In town, spa days and afternoons spent shop-
ping at the local art galleries are the norm.

Warmer days coax a rainbow of wildflowers —
red skyrockets, orange globemallows, yellow pop-
pies, blue lupine — out of the high-desert
landscape. For the best views, take a walk. A
number of paths crisscross the area, providing
ramblers with seemingly endless opportunities to
witness the blooming plants, not to mention other
stunning terrain. Boynton Canyon Trail #47, a very
manageable trek, is a good place to start. Refuel
with a cold beverage and a fresh salad, sandwich,
or gourmet pizza at
Canyon Breeze
, where the
back patio reveals yet another remarkable vista.
27 – 39
During this time of year, average temperatures top
out near 95°F (35°C), which means the days are
well suited to the region’s easygoing water activ-
ities. Rent an inner tube from Sedona Adventure
Tours for a fun-filled three- to four-hour float down
the Verde River. Or plan a day at
Slide Rock
State Park
, a recreation area popular for its 80-
foot-long (24 meters) natural waterslide and
multiple swimming holes along Oak Creek. To
escape the sun entirely, book a massage or facial
(or both) at one of the local day spas.
1 – 13
There’s certainly a chance you’ll wake up to a light
dusting of snow, but average daytime highs from
58°F (14°C) to 66°F (19°C) generally ensure that
outdoor activities — a bike ride or round of golf
perhaps — remain quite pleasant. And the crisp,
clear evening skies
are perfect for astronomy
excursions with Sedona Star Gazing. Besides
identifying and discussing the constellations,
guides bring distant star clusters, galaxies, alien
planets, and more into focus using the operation’s
high-power telescopes. Local vineyards, and their
requisite tasting rooms, make for enjoyable out-
ings, too.
40 – 52
While there are many ways to get out and take in
Sedona’s surrounding beauty — and maybe
catch a glimpse of the foliage’s seasonal color
change — one of the most unique is a ride
aboard the
Verde Canyon Railroad
. The basic
four-hour tour meanders around craggy rock for-
mations and among desolate mesas untouched
by 21st-century life. The Blazin’ M Ranch also
recalls a simpler time, and, with steer roping
lessons, a chuck wagon dinner, and live Western-
themed entertainment, makes for an enjoyable
family outing.
