Midwest, Other Areas

“My home resort is at Meadow Ridge in Door County, and if the weather is good, there are a ton of things to do outside. You have

many beaches to choose from on the Lake Michigan and Green Bay side of the peninsula, with trails that you can explore.”

— GotSun

1. LIGHTHOUSE TOUR:

Make a daylong tour of the historic lighthouses of Door County — there are 11

of them that have helped sailors navigate the rocky waters around Wisconsin bays and islands for

more than two centuries.

2. GO TO DELL:

Discover what a “dell” is, on a land-and-water duck boat tour in the Wisconsin Dells.

3. CHERRY PICK:

Bite into a hot cherry pie — at the Grand Traverse Pie Company, during the National

Cherry Festival, or any time you have a chance to sample the orchard fruit that’s made Traverse City,

Michigan, famous as America’s Cherry Capital.

4. COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Take in a Notre Dame football game in South Bend, near Mishawaka, Indiana.

5. FISH BOIL:

After watching the fiery spectacle of roiling cauldrons filled with potatoes, onions, and

freshly caught fish, dig into a tender, mild whitefish steak at one of Door County’s famed fish boils.

6. LUMBERJACKS:

Marvel at the feats of northern Midwestern lumberjacks at the Fred Scheers

Lumberjack Shows in the Minocqua area of Wisconsin, as they compete in shows of strength

involving axes, saws, and raw muscle power.

7. SNOWMOBILING:

Slice through snow-covered terrain in Eagle River, Wisconsin, the self-

proclaimed Snowmobile Capital of the World, where 500 miles (805 kilometers) of trails network

amid rolling terrain, frozen lakes, and pine-studded forests.

8. FISHING:

Angle for walleye or smallmouth bass from the side of a boat or a pier, in warm or cool

weather, in the lake-laden lands of Mille Lacs County, Minnesota.

9. SAND DUNES:

After a calorie-burning climb to the top, tumble down a massive sand dune along

Lake Michigan. Two sites are Sleeping Bear Dunes in Traverse City, and Mount Baldy at Indiana

Dunes National Lakeshore in northwestern Indiana.

10. SKIING IN MICHIGAN:

Celebrate the snow on some 60 downhill ski trails, or on miles of trails for

cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, at Michigan’s Boyne Mountain Resort.

hy Go?

For a coastal experience without having to venture to either of the U.S.’ coasts. The Midwest shelters an

ocean of water activities, with many states bordering one of America’s Great Lakes. The region is so packed with bodies

of water that Minnesota is nicknamed Land of 10,000 Lakes. This means ample opportunities for swimming, water-

skiing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and more. But there are surprises, too. Cold-weather seasons promise

conditions ripe for skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. And gems such as a lighthouse trail, great food towns, and

massive sand dunes are sure to make you think about the Midwest the next time you develop a case of wanderlust.
