For a four-season destination that embraces the great outdoors —whether you want active or more sedentary
pursuits. If fly-fishing on a gently babbling trout stream or slaloming down the side of a glistening mountain is your thing,
the Poconos can easily deliver. Prefer to simply see where the day takes you? The countryside is dotted with charming
towns begging to be explored.
Pocono and Catskill Mountains

With the rising temperatures comes the melting
snow, making for higher water levels on the
Delaware and Lehigh rivers — perfect conditions
for white-water rafting. Novices can sign up for an
excursion through Pocono Whitewater outfitters.
For those with ample experience, canoe and kayak
rentals deliver a rewarding challenge. The area’s
waterfalls are also at their most magnificent this
time of year. And since the heat of summer hasn’t
yet descended on the region,
hiking and biking
are great ways to witness the region’s rebirth, as
a range of flora are in bloom, and various fauna
can be witnessed with young in tow.

Skiing, snowboarding,
snowmobiling
, snow-
man-building — whatever your favorite
cold-weather pursuit, it’s within reach. After all,
this is where the first snowmaking machines
purred to life in the 1950s and began pumping
powder onto the slopes, ensuring no winter vaca-
tion to the region would be met with anything less
than perfection. Today, snowmaking continues and
fills in whenever Mother Nature needs a hand.
You’ll encounter everything from bunny trails and
expert-only black diamond runs to freestyle terrain
parks. And for a taste of the tropics, visit the
H2Oooohh! Indoor Waterpark, featuring water-
slides, a wave pool, and a surfing simulator.

A kaleidoscope of colors emerges, reaching from
tree to tree, blanketing the region in a beautiful
quilt. This is a peaceful time to visit. Spend a day
in historic towns such as
Milford
(don’t miss the
Upper Mill and its centuries-old, and still function-
ing, waterwheel) or Jim Thorpe (named after the
legendary athlete), and indulge in delicious home
cooking, browse art galleries, or shop for antiques
treasures. Enjoy the bounty of the season, as vir-
tually every weekend there’s a harvest festival with
delicious local treats located somewhere within
driving distance.Who knows? You might get lucky
and have a chance to ski before prime season.

Whether you hunger for the relaxing or the rivet-
ing, there is no shortage of pursuits. Splash with
the family in the resort pool, or lazily float a tube
as it meanders down a mountain stream. Wake
up with the sun and meet a guide for a fishing
extravaganza, or see how stealthy you can be on
your own.Witness the transformation of the area’s
ski resorts as
zip lines
, adventure courses, and
mountain coasters deliver thrills in the absence of
snow. And if golf is your game, there are world-
class courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, A.W.
Tillinghast, and Robert Trent Jones.
