larence, the second-class angel struggling to earn his wings,
walks into a bar and orders a flaming rum punch. As anyone
who’s watched
It’s a Wonderful Life
knows, the strange request
gets Clarence and George Bailey thrown out into the snowy streets of
Bedford Falls. But all’s well in the end: George discovers the true meaning
of giving, Clarence earns his wings, and the viewers, aglow with emotion,
wipe away tears as the credits roll.
Whether curled up on the couch watching holiday classics or basking
in the heat of a crackling fire, cold-weather months call for drinks that warm
from the inside out. Cupping chilled hands around a steaming mug is a uni-
versal comfort move, akin to wrapping up in a cashmere throw or sinking
into a hot bath.
Here are seven classic comfort drinks, perfect for enjoying après
ski or entirely in lieu of snow sports. And with short ingredient lists
and simple preparation, they’re as easy to whip up in your resort unit
as in your own kitchen.

The blustery seacoast town of Foynes
in County Limerick, Ireland, was once
a bustling trans-Atlantic port for
seaplanes known as flying boats. In
1942, the chef at the terminal’s
restaurant concocted this recipe. The
ingredients were simple enough —
but the combination created an
elixir capable of breathing life into
exhausted passengers.
6 ounces freshly brewed coffee
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 1/2 ounces whiskey
Whipped cream
Pour coffee into a warmed glass. Add
brown sugar and stir to dissolve. Mix in the
whiskey. Add a layer of whipped cream.
Serves one.
